What is the Division of Academic Support?

The Division of Academic Support exists to provide all Bacone College students with the academic services and other encouragement which will help them persist in their studies, maintain good academic standing, and earn their academic degree. The Division of Academic Support is made up of two programs:

• Academic Support Services

  All Bacone College students are invited to strengthen their academic skills, to learn how to succeed academically, and to continue to graduation by using the services we provide.

• Trio
  

  Trio is a Federal program offering support services to students who have made application and been accepted.

Who we are?

Thomas A. Karman, Director of Student Support Services

My major responsibility is to see that the Division of Academic Support helps students get ready to take college courses, pass their courses successfully, stay enrolled, and graduate prepared to succeed as professionals and as citizens.  This includes making sure the Center is staffed as well as possible with both the human and non-human resources that will help students.  I welcome suggestions of how we can do a better job helping you, the student.

I have been in higher education all my professional life.  I started out serving a small, private liberal arts college in Ohio and then moved to Oklahoma State University, where I served as professor and head for about 15 years.  I left OSU to serve as a consult in the development of a new Christian university in Jakarta, Indonesia, and then continued an interest in things international by serving as Director for International Studies at Oklahoma Baptist University.  My last stint was teaching in Liberia, West Africa, at a University which had been almost wholly destroyed during their prolonged and brutal civil war.

I earned my B.A. at Albion College (Michigan), majoring in History and Political Science, my M.A. at Harvard University (Massachusetts), majoring in East Asian Regional Studies, and my Ph.D. at the University of Toledo (Ohio), majoring in Higher Education Administration.

I have worked with the TRiO program for several years and keep track of all the administrative details.  If you want to schedule a tutor, get help on the computer, learn about available services, find out what is going on, or have someone listen to what is going on in your life, please drop in my office or give me a call at x-7254.   I can certainly get you headed in the right direction.  I really enjoy working with Bacone students, who are full of life and promise.

I attended Connors College as a business major, have a husband and two children (who live close to Muskogee), and three beautiful grandsons, who are my joy.  I am a camper, or at least a motor-home dweller, and I like to travel when possible.  My husband and I rode our motorcycle (Gold Wing) from border to border and coast to coast.
