Bacone College welcomed Mr. Terry Cosby, Chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Services- USDA, on Aug. 23.
Mr. Cosby presented Bacone with grant funding in excess of half a million dollars to create “Ag in the Classroom”.
These grants are part of the College’s move to revitalize its historic Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science. The grants will fund a faculty salary for two years, ten full tuition scholarships of $12,000 each, and associated costs for internships and training.
In addition, Bacone will become the hub for American Indian farmers, ranchers, and producers to learn about USDA programs, grants and loans.
The language department at Bacone College will also be translating NRCS documents into traditional Native languages for those who communicate in Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Cheyenne-Arapaho, Lenape, Kiowa, and other languages.
Training days for farmers, as well as for high school counselors, who want to direct their students into agribusiness careers will also be offered.
